Education

The motivation behind the education program is industry’s need for graduates with a broader understanding of digital content creation and analysis.  In terms of the games industry, for instance, this means that graduates need the artistic and narrative skills to develop the game-play, but also the computing skills to understand what is possible and to make it happen.

The education program is aimed at providing a partial solution to the State’s skills shortage.  Offering a range of courses that are appealing to prospective students is expected to attract a large number of applicants.  The resulting competition to enrol will ensure the quality of those selected.  The skill set of the graduates produced will put them in an enviable position not only with respect to the creation and development of new media industries, but also in terms of updating traditional businesses within the State.

A range of degrees aimed at local and overseas students under the auspices of the Centre.  The interdisciplinary degree structure will allow students access to a wider range of subjects, and allow the Universities and TAFE access to previously inaccessible cohorts of students.  The structure of the degree programs offered depends on the form of the agreements negotiated between participating institutions.  It is envisaged that these agreements will initially facilitate a combined masters program, with other programs following later.

A proposed agreement is being developed between the Adelaide Campus of the Carnegie Mellon Entertainment Technology Unit and the Centre for Visual Technologies and Digital Design.  The interrelation of the two bodies will help South Australia capitalise on the opportunity which the local campus of ETC represents.  A number of possible modes of collaboration have been discussed, but allowing students enrolled in ETC and Centre-based degrees to choose electives across the participating campuses is seen as particularly appealing.  The possibility of having students enrolled in the Centre participate in ETC project groups has also been suggested by the Adelaide head of ETC during discussions. The education program component of the proposed Centre would also provide a pathway for local undergraduate students into the ETU Masters degree.
